Highest rankings place ever!

Well, what a year! Since the ‘Masters’ in 2006 the band has not been out of the prizes at any contest entered, showing the remarkable attitude and dedication of everyone associated with the band.

This progress has seen the band move from a lowly 20th position to nearly breaking into the top 10 for the first time ever!

We all hope that the next update of the rankings after the ‘English Nationals’ in Preston will move the band forward still, breaking into the top 10!

We however need your support! Details will be here soon about tickets / prices etc. for the ‘Naionals’ so that you can come and support the band at what could be an historic event!

Carlton Main in the prizes again!

We have once again achieved a place in the prizes at a contest!

Since May 2006, we have not been out of the prizes at any contest we have entered, showing the progress of the band in this time.

However this has to be one of the highspots of the latest Frickley revival, coming 2nd at the ‘All England International Masters’ performing In Memoriam RK by Elgar Howarth.

The competition had many of the worlds top bands, and we were pleased to have beaten bands such as Rothwell Temperance, Scottish Co-op, European champions - Brass Band Willebroek, Desford Colliery, Fairey Band and many others.

Carlton Main Achieves World Wide Web success!

We are extremely pleased to announce that the bands website has won an award!

The band has won the coveted award “website of the month” for April 2007 with nearly 45% of the votes! This has been recently confirmed by ‘themouthpiece.com’.

Where’s Raymond? Update 2 (at last!)

G’day Cobblers

A very enjoyable time in Melbourne seeing Brisbane Excelsior achieve a very well deserved hat trick of national titles, winning the Hymn, set test and own choice test, coming third in the March. Can’t believe this guys that I heard most of the performances (must be getting old) and there was only one winner - very classy.

Not getting too old to sink a few ambers in celebration afterwards though.

9th April - woke up with headache but had a good day seeing the sites of Melbourne.

10th April - Flew to Brisbane on a two hour flight, then onto Club Ridler”s on the outskirts of Brisbane.

11th April - Beautiful sunny day (haven’t had a bad one yet) going down to the Gold Coast about 100 k”s to Surfers Paradise.

We have booked to stay in Jupiters Casino tonight to take in a show.

Where are the Band Mascots?

WANTED – FOR A REWARD…… Information on the whereabouts of the two band Mascots ‘
Carlton’ & ‘Frickley’, two Pygmy Goats.  They were last seen grazing near the ‘Mega Love’ Kebab house on Barnsley Road, South Elmsall…..

Any information would be gratefully received.

The successful informant can look forward to anything from the menu, especially the shop’s speciality Lamb Kebabs…

Where’s Raymond? Updates

G’uday all,

Hope all is wall. We landed in Sydney at 7pm Thursday night after a 23 hour flight.

I couldn’t sleep on the flight but managed to watch six films.

Sarah, my niece picked us up at the airport and took us to her house in Mosman, a suburb of Sydney.

We went to a local pub for a few ambers.

Friday: We had breakfast at Balmoral beach, at the world famous Bathers Pavilion Restaurant, sitting at a table overlooking the beach and ocean. It’s a hard life…….. and well someone has to do it. Then we went into Sydney for the day on the ferry. Ann and Sarah did the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk and I watched from the pub because I am a scaredy puss when it comes to heights. They had a great time, quite windy up on the Bridge; Ann got a certificate and a bump on the head! Then dinner at the Rocks, overlooking the harbour.

Saturday: Breakfast on the beach again, then inland to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains around 100km west of Sydney and I made Sarah keep to the speed limit, defiantly worth a visit. They are called the Blue mountains due to the bluish haze that covers them from the Eucalyptus trees. Back to Mosman, threw a few steaks on the Barbie and a few more ambers.

Sunday: Breakfast at Balmoral again, watched the Sydney Outriggers Club do some races (6 people canoes) and then the sausage sizzle on the beach.

Into Sydney for the day by ferry again – passed the Opera house and bridge. Temperatures around a chilly 25 degrees. Brrrr….

Went to Paddy’s Market, China Town, Darling Harbour and then to the Opera House bar for a few well earned refreshing beverages, then watched the sun setting.

Tomorrow (Monday)we will be flying to Uluru (Ayres Rock). Will keep an eye out for the Dingos…..

Update - No.3 (No.2 Still attached to the Pigeon!)

Gidday Cobblers

Arrived in Melbourne Wednesday 4th April at 6pm From Ayres Rock after 3.5 hours flight to Sydney then 1.5 hours flight to Sydney then 1.5 hours to Melbourne. Met up with Steve and Tina, Rick and Amanda and Howard. They and Brisbane Excelsior send all their best wishes.

Thursday 5th April – Went to Solo competition Steve came disappointed 2nd place. Then off to rehearsals – Band playing well, then a few ambers down the neck.

Friday 6th April. Rehearsals at 9.30am to 12 noon in Kew Bandroom then invited for meal and ambers in Kew’s Local. The only pub open on Good Friday.

3.30 pm March Practice – now waiting for next rehearsal at 7.30pm. They work really hard!

Kirsty’s CD Wows 4barsrest!

The review of Kirsty Abbotts first solo CD “Soliloquy” has been completed by 4barsrest.

They obviously have taste and agree with our opinions of it- it’s fantastic!

Here is an extract from the review:

“Thankfully the art of true lyrical cornet playing is not dead.

In an age when far too many young and impressionable players are mistakenly taught using the Olympic motto method of improvement - stronger, faster, higher – the artistic values of tonality, phrasing, production and lyricism seem to be dying virtues. Not with Kirsty Abbotts they don’t.

This recording should in fact be made a legal requirement for any teacher who believes they have the best interests of young players at heart – for this what the true strengths of high quality brass band instrumental playing is all about. Forget about little Peter or Megan gaining another certificate to take home to the parents saying they are now the proud holders of a Grade 10 in pointless brass playing. Instead, get them to take home this CD, plonk them in front of the stereo or stick it on their iPod and just tell them to listen and learn – and we are talking about the teachers here first, the pupils second.”
