Kirsty’s CD Wows 4barsrest!

The review of Kirsty Abbotts first solo CD “Soliloquy” has been completed by 4barsrest.

They obviously have taste and agree with our opinions of it- it’s fantastic!

Here is an extract from the review:

“Thankfully the art of true lyrical cornet playing is not dead.

In an age when far too many young and impressionable players are mistakenly taught using the Olympic motto method of improvement - stronger, faster, higher – the artistic values of tonality, phrasing, production and lyricism seem to be dying virtues. Not with Kirsty Abbotts they don’t.

This recording should in fact be made a legal requirement for any teacher who believes they have the best interests of young players at heart – for this what the true strengths of high quality brass band instrumental playing is all about. Forget about little Peter or Megan gaining another certificate to take home to the parents saying they are now the proud holders of a Grade 10 in pointless brass playing. Instead, get them to take home this CD, plonk them in front of the stereo or stick it on their iPod and just tell them to listen and learn – and we are talking about the teachers here first, the pupils second.”

Congratulations from Abroad!

Here is a message sent to the band following our recent performance at the area contest:

On behalf of the Skui Brass Band, I want to congratulate CMFCB on your performance at the Regionals last weekend!!

It’s a tough competition to get through, as Yorkshire has so many pre-qualified bands to the Nationals and a high standard, but you did a great job of it, coming in the prize list as number 4.
Would you please give the band our warmest congratulations.

Best regards
Stephen :o)

Area Contest Results

Well done to ALL at Carlton Main for coming in the prizes for the first time in EIGHT years! We have claimed 4th place at arguably the most difficult area contest in the country, coming only 1 point behind 3rd place Black Dyke Band, and only 3 points behind the eventual winner!

The band had a ‘good’ draw, playing 13th (out of 13 bands!), and put in a sterling performance, showing the progress the band has made, and movement in the right direction since the 7th place at the ‘areas’ last year.

This consolidates the band’s poisition as one of the finest in the land, and should help our steady climb up the rankings.

Full results:

1. Brighouse and Rastrick, A. Morrison, 12, 195
2. Hepworth (Lanson Homes), M. Bentham, 9, 194
3. Black Dyke, Dr. N. Childs, 1, 193*

CMFCB extends sponsorship deal

Ben Bailey Homes have extended their sponsorship of CMFCB for a further Twelve Months and the band is thrilled.
Carlton Main’s chairman “Ray Sykes” commented
“Without the sponsorship it would be very difficult for the Band to function as it does so our gratitude goes out to Ben Bailey. These are very exciting times for the Band who have recently filled vacant seats with top class Individuals who have brought the quality that is needed for the Band to move on to the next stage of their progression through the Rankings”

Further signings announced prior to the Area contest!

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the signing of a further four new players to bolster the ranks prior to the Band’s assault on the Area contest in
Bradford in March and for the future.

Janet Lewis joins on Flugel from former National Champions, the Leyland Band, whilst Martin Swann and Dave Jones join us from the Thorseby Band to play Repiano and Second Cornet.

We are also pleased to announce that joining on Principal Euphonium is David Belshaw - David needs no introduction to the Brass Band world save to say we are delighted that he has accepted our offer to join. David replaces Ciaran Young who has very decently moved onto second Euphonium - the Band would like to place on record our sincerest thanks to Ciaran for his sterling efforts as Principal Euphonium over the last three years - it is greatly appreciated! In Ciaran moving over to Second Euphonium and David joining, the section can now be considered to be one of the strongest in the area.

It is hoped that all the recent signings including Richard Windle and Dennis Hadfield, show the bands intent
