The very first known picture of the Band taken outside the Plough Inn, in South Elmsall, 1884
The Band in 1910 outside Frickley Hall.
A fragment of a picture of the South Elmsall & Frickley Colliery Silver Prize Band, again outside Frickley Hall in 1912. The original, shown in a newspaper cutting can be seen on the right.
Date unknown - possibly early 20’s with Noel Thorpe in the middle? Pre 1922?
A section of the Band with Conductor Noel Thorpe. It was NT who led the Band to a British Open Victory in 1922 on ‘Lohengrin’……would this be 1922?
1947 outside the Colliery Managers House..
The ’50’s were a great time for the Band when it was virtually unbeatable - some of the leading personalities of the day, such as Jimmy Shepherd, recently voted the World’s greatest Cornet Player (along side Mr Arban presumably?) and esteemed Cornet Player David Read - now a respected Adjudicator and Writer were counted amongst our ranks….
The CMFCB Broadcasting Band in 1952, just prior to the Band embarking upon a third tour of Holland. Quite a bond was formed between CMFCB and the Netherlands as it is believed we were amongst the first English band’s to give a concert there after the war, along with Foden’s Motor works Band and Farey Aviation….
The 1960’s….A 17 year old Ray Sykes in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany in 1963…….
